The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words: “Rei” which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and “Ki” which is "life force energy". Reiki is "spiritually guided universal life force energy."

My Reiki Journey

I felt deeply called to share Reiki over 25 years ago in Asheville, NC after having a profound and transformative personal experience with my two compassionate and gifted Reiki Master Teachers, Barbara and Peter Johnson. And in 1995, I received my Level I and II Reiki attunements from them. Barbara and Peter were trained in the direct lineage of Hawayo Takata, who introduced Reiki to the West. Since then, I have completed my Level III Reiki Master attunement, allowing me to share and teach this profound healing practice with others and attune students to the Reiki universal life force frequency.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is an ancient form of energy healing that originated in India and the East thousands of years ago. Though its sacred wisdom was passed down orally for generations, it was eventually lost—until Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese scholar and monk, rediscovered and channeled the healing symbols and techniques in the mid-1800s.

Originally, Reiki healing was available only in the East. It made its way to the West through Hawaii, thanks to Hawayo Takata, the first female Reiki Master. She initially used Reiki to heal herself and was so transformed by the experience that she dedicated her life to learning, practicing, and sharing it with others.

How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki is passed from master to student through sacred attunements—just as Dr. Usui initiated the first Reiki healers. These attunements open the recipient’s energy channels, allowing them to connect with and channel universal life force energy for healing.

A Reiki session can be received in person or from a distance with the recipient’s permission. The experience often feels like a warm, radiant energy flowing through and around the body, bringing deep relaxation, peace, and a sense of well-being. Reiki works holistically, addressing physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual imbalances while supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

The Benefits of Reiki

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive healing modality that complements all other medical and therapeutic approaches. It has been shown to:

  • Promote deep relaxation and stress relief

  • Support emotional healing and balance

  • Enhance mental clarity and focus

  • Assist in pain management and physical recovery

  • Strengthen the immune system

  • Encourage personal growth and spiritual connection

While Reiki is a profoundly spiritual practice, it is not a religion and does not require any specific beliefs. Dr. Usui, however, recommended following simple ethical principles to cultivate peace and harmony within oneself and the world.
